I Need Help!

We are going on a beach trip soon and I don't have a book! I'm reading I Capture the Castle right now, which is delightful, but I have to have it finished by the time we leave for the trip. So, what is the BEST book you have ever read? I need a recommendation. My parameters are:
1. No Russian literature. Life's too short for all that angst. Plus, I already read all the Cliff's Notes in high school.
2. No Nicholas Sparks. How did this guy get published?
3. I am not a big fan of the Bronte sisters. I realize this makes me patently unlikable, but there's nothing I can do about it. Lacking appreciation for Victorian literature is a character flaw.
4. Oprah and I seem to have very different taste in books.

So, is there anything left? And if you have a copy of a page turner that can get wet and sandy, bring it over! I'll give you my copy of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society that I can't seem to get rid of. (It was great!)

Jane Austin continues to be the winner. She is funny, sarcastic and likeable...but maybe she is too much like the Brontes? Good luck with the book hunt and have a great time:)

I loved reading the Children of the Promise series by Dean Hughes. LDS author, very light, read them in High School, but I fell in love with that family. I don't know if it is the kind of thing you are looking for, but it came to my mind.

Two books I think of that I could never stop loving are thinking about are East of Eden and 1000 Years of Solitude. Great stories and they won't mush your brain. I also LOVED Beautiful Boy by David Sheff if you have any experience/family with addiction it's just an amazing story and helps you understand.

For brain mush I just read "The Castaways" by Hilderbrand and I really liked it. Gotta look on my Kindle for some more. How do people go on vacation without a kindle??

Are we talking light beach fiction? Cause I like Rosamond Pilcher and Adriana Trigiani for that. I will check my bookcase and bring you a couple to the park. (I may be late, 11:30 )

This summer I read the O'Malley series by Dee Henderson and loved them. I haven't been that hooked on a series since Twilight. It is about a group of Orphans that adopt each other as a family as they become adults and all the twists, turns that their lives and career choices take them. It is part mystery, romance, thriller with a Christian undertone. It starts with a prequel of "Danager in the Shadows". I loved most all of the 7 books, but had a hard time getting throught #3 as the main character is like a CSI agent, and it goes into detail about her job, and I struggle with any thing like CSI. Anyway I would highly recommend them!

Giving you a book recommendation is like telling Picasso about a "new" color, I think. But here goes . . .

I loved Peace Like a River by Leif Enger. It's not exactly a page turner in the suspense sense but it is a thought-provoking, extremely well written work. It's about a family's roadtrip and search for their brother on the lam. The layers of symbolism are amazing. I have a copy.

Have you read the No. 1 Detective Agency series? They're pretty fun.

I second Paige on East of Eden. Curse the swearing! But it's incredible. You've probably already read it, but if you haven't, pay close attention to people's initials when you do.

P.S. We've talked about it before, but I still recommend French Impressions. I think it would be a fantastic vacation book, or is that fantastique?

The only books I have read altely are for our Mia Maid book club, so they may be a little easy for you, but hey, you could finish a few rather than just one! So the two we have read are Ida B (darling and thoughtful) and The Goosegirl (makes you think, good lesson learned). Let us know what you pick! ALso I read the kite runner years ago. That was an amazing read. Rough because of the horrible story, but very life changing.

I'm not really into all that LDS fiction, but my sister (who manages a Seagull Book) talked me into giving the Great And Terrible series, by Chris Stewart, a try and I loved them. It follows a family from the pre-existance through the last days. They motivated me to get my food storage built up! :) Book one (of 6) is called The Brothers.

I am reading Crossing To Safety by Wallace Stegner,
and I really like it so far. Maybe the problem is that you have already read everything! Have fun at the beach, I am jealous!

My bookclub is reading Dan Brown's latest..The Lost Symbol and Steve Martini Guardian of Lies...oh that is a Cold War mystery so may not work. I agree with No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series. They are funny and light reading as is Miss Julia Makes Up Her Mind. Shannon Hales (Goosegirl) writes light romance that is pretty readable. Pretty eclectic list:)

I think you should read Anathem by Neal Stephenson.

I'm so glad to finally meet someone who doesn't like Bronte. I thought my chick card was in jeopardy.

The Hunger Games & Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins (my two new favorite books right now!! Fantastic! They are YA lit.)

Firefly Lane - Kristen Hannah

Me Talk Pretty One Day - David
Sedaris (hysterical essays)

Plain Truth - Jodi Picoult

19 Minutes - Jodi Picoult
