Planning a trip starts with a crazy idea. Usually, Scott and I have crazy ideas at different times, which keeps us from doing anything stupid, most of the time. Once in awhile, though, there will be a volley of text messages like this one:
-We can go somewhere for cheap.
-Should we?
-If we don't book it, we'll regret it. If we do book it, we'll regret it, but at least we'll be going.
-Let's go!
-Done.
Waaaaaaa! Then comes the next step, called "What were we thinking," which includes paying off the trip, preparing, finding someone to watch the kids who didn't make the cut and freaking out about possibly dying and leaving a bunch of orphans to ruin the lives of whomever gets custody of them.
But it's all worth it for moments like these...Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.
We couldn't decide what to stand in line for Saturday morning, a Broadway show or free tix to a Mostly Mozart concert at the Lincoln Center. Since Mary Poppins was perfect and Newsies was so amazing, and the experience so fun, we opted to the Mozart. We thought we might not be able to top our Broadway experiences. Golda and I stood in line with hundreds of other poor music lovers while Scott and Ruby hoofed it uptown for famous chocolate chip cookies. The line was long, but we got tickets! And cookies. Then we walked through Chinatown, stopping at each and every little shop to peruse the exact same crappy merchandise we had seen at the last store. Don't get me wrong; we loved it! At last we reached the bridge.
It was such a scenic and iconic place that we got a little carried away with pictures, despite the rain. Then we got a lot carried away with leaping pictures. Clearly, the girls were inspired by Newsies.
See Scott waiting in the background of all these pictures? Live in the moment, Scott! Or the hour, as the case may be. Because really, you're on the Brooklyn Bridge. Why are you in a hurry? So we decided to take a bunch of releve pictures.
Waiting
Me lecturing Scott on enjoying the journey. Scott thinking, "I would enjoy the journey if I were spending it with a slice of pizza instead of you."
Pizza was still a ways off, but we did stop to buy a mango on a stick, which was the juiciest, most delicious thing in the world. So naturally, we had to take our time and stop to enjoy it.
It was at this point that Scott got down and crawled along the Brooklyn Bridge. He threw down his backpack said, "I could crawl across the Brooklyn Bridge faster that you guys can walk!"
A woman who has given birth to six kids should never laugh as hard as I did watching Scott crawl along the pavement as cars sped by and mango juice dripped down our chins. Enjoy the journey, Scott.
We finally did make it to the other side. We found a really famous pizza joint with a line that snaked around the block. We went to the pizza place next door, which had a significantly shorter line and could not have been any more delicious if the pizza had been made out of heroin. See, Scott, worth the wait. And worth the time spent. Because who is ever going to forget their dad crawling on his hands and knees across the Brooklyn Bridge in bright green pants? Nobody. And that's why we go on trips.
