Ballet vs. Christmas

I said to Xanthe, "Grandma called me today to see what you want for Christmas!" She answered, "But I'm not going to Christmas. I'm going to ballet." That's right, it's Monday. That means only one more day until Xanthe's ballet class. She couldn't possibly think about Christmas when ballet is tomorrow! Fortunately, we have quite a confluence of good things in life this week. We get both ballet and Christmas rolled into one big production: The Nutcracker. It all starts tomorrow, which means today was loaded down with all the activities that got squished out of the way for Nutcracker. Flute lessons and waiting in the car for flute students were covered by Golda, Xanthe and Ptolemy while guitar lessons and visiting Nana were handled by Ruby, Coco and Freestone. Araceli was in charge of getting the whole week's homework done at Emma's house while "playing school." Then we squeezed in four last dance classes followed by late-night ice cream. There's only one more class before Nutcracker hits, and that's Xanthe's class tomorrow. Nothing interferes with that. Not Nutcracker. Not Christmas. If Santa could bring Xanthe's teacher Lisa and leave her under the Christmas tree, that's what Xanthe really wants. She won't settle for a substitute, either. I told her, "Maybe someday I'll be your ballet teacher." She looked confused and said, "But then who would be the mom?" We'll have to work on the concept of two good things at once; mothering and teaching...dance and Christmas. You can have it all, my little girl.

That girl of yours is a cute one! I must be rather emotional this morning because the last sentence brought a tear to my eye.

What a jammed day. In addition to all of the comings and goings, you served your neighbor by watching kids and helping me with my sick kid errand. Izzy was SO excited to have applesauce. She opened the door and said, "My applesauce is here." We were both relieved for her to eat something. Thank you for all you do. We appreciate you.

I love Xanthe's comment "but who would be the mom." It's fun to hear young children as they make sense of their world. Good luck this week with Nutcracker. You pack an incredible agenda into every day. Life is not a spectator sport at your house. Seems like this year has been harder to connect between preschool and preschool and playgroups....But Em would love to play with Xanthe!
