Arizona Dopps

Jenny and Jeremy are the best hosts.  We have descended on them in their homes in Las Vegas and Phoenix, and they're always welcoming and fun.  They greeted us Saturday night after our Grand Canyon adventures, with a huge tupperware of chocolate chip cookies and dinner. Jenny had twenty questions for Frank about life in China.  She can make anything fun!
Gilbert temple on our outing to Scottsdale.

Old Twon Scottsdale is so cute.  We had a great time.  I could have spent hours looking in all the cute shops.
Citrus trees!

Hippie fair in Scottsdale
Hunger curtailed our window shopping and we had lunch at one of only two Grimaldi locations outside New York.  The pizza was so NY style and so good. It went well with the pilsners Tolly and Kate ordered. ha

Frank is not a big fan of pizza.  The only thing he wanted was green peppers.  OK.  So a half a large pizza for Frank covered with vegetables none of the other kids will touch.  No problem. Frank scarfed down the whole half, plus slices from the other pies.  Teenage boys are insane. And this was a food he claimed not to like.

A little hike in Tempe.

Cute Neeley!

The Mesa temple, built in 1920ish.  I love this architecture..

Ice cream night!  The Dopps were in Dopp heaven with Breyers ice cream on sale for $3 a carton, with an extra $5 off if you bought five.
The morning view from Jer and Jen's back porch.  Isn't it peaceful?
Kate showing us her hideout at the park.

happy, happy!

Tziporah working it at another park excursion.

Our last night in Queen Creek, around the campfire in the back yard.  We love our cousins.  I shared the guest room with Ruby, and eventually Ptolemy and Tziporah, too, who slept on the floor the last night.  It was a cozy, welcoming room filled with as much love as the rest of the house.

Tuesday, there was no school.  That was our day to drive home.  Freestone and Ruby both wanted to make it home for their ballet classes at 6, so we left Phoenix at 2:30 in the morning to give us wiggle room on the 12-hour drive.  We sailed out of the metro area in an hour with zero traffic.  In fact, there was no traffic anywhere, and we hardly stopped. The kids were sleepy, NPR was coming in loud and clear on satellite radio, and I was wide awake due to the rare intake of an energy drink.  Whatever works at 3 am, right?
We did stop in St. George to tour Brigham Young's winter home and get gas.  By that time, we were on track to be home by Freestone's afternoon class, which he'd planned on missing, so we just powered through, getting home at 2:00.  Wow!  We made excellent time!  It was good to be home so we could start planning the next trip.
