Blankets

Book 3 graduation last Saturday

"Mommy, how do blankets work?"

"They make you warm and comfy!"

"Oh."

It would have been that easy, but Freestone jumped in.  He is convinced he is a better parent than I. "Mom, let me do it."

In a sweet, high-pitched voice, he began, "Tizzy, when two things move, they rub against each other and cause what's called friction!  See?  When I rub my hands together, they get warm! (Puts his hands on Tizzy's cheeks.)  Inside your body, atoms are moving all the time, and they cause friction, so they create heat!  Then the heat wants to come out of your body because outside your body is cooler than inside!  But when the heat molecules escape, they hit the blanket and bounce back!  So all that heat is trapped under the blanket and you get warm!"

Striding away, Freestone threw back over his shoulder, "You're welcome."

Tizzy looked up at me from under her warm blanket and blinked.  And blinked.  Then we both sighed.  All those molecules and atoms were making us warm and comfy.
